Machine Vision Based Lumber Grain Measurement
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, measurement of wood grains is discussed. A number of image processing techniques are first applied to images of all four long surfaces of sawn lumber. This gives us the rates and directions of the visible grains, which enables us to estimate the actual thickness and 3D directions of wood fibers. These are very important indicators about the strength of the subject. In these experiments, we consider boards sawn from the heart side of the trunks of spruce trees. It is shown, how the position of the wood core can be estimated to few mm accuracy by only analyzing the grains seen on the surface. Also, we show how the measurements of fiber direction and density of annual growth correlate with the measured strength

Understanding Laser-based 3d Triangulation Methods
Machine vision systems based on 3D triangulation are employed in a range of industries from automotive and electronics manufacturing to lumber mills. While the basic concept of measurement using triangulation is simple, there are a number of important details that must be addressed when implementing such systems. These include how laser-based 3D triangulation systems are configured and how lase...
متن کاملA Real-Time Imaging System for Lumber Strength Prediction
In this article, we describe a system for machine vision–based lumber strength prediction. The system utilizes images taken from all four sides of pinewood boards. Those images are further divided into small subareas, and the local gradients inside each area are used to calculate the local grain direction. Together, these directions form the grain direction map. The grain direction map and knot...
متن کاملMachine Vision Systems for Processing Hardwood Lumber and Logs
Machine vision and automated processing systems are under development at Virginia Tech University with support and cooperation from the USDA Forest Service. Our goals are to help U.S. hardwood producers automate, reduce costs, increase product volume and value recovery, and market higher value, more accurately graded and described products. Any vision system is composed of two bread tasks: imag...

W hen a tree is felled, a process begins to maximize the value of that wood. The log is taken to a sawmill, where someone decides whether the wood is more valuable as lumber, veneer, or chips. If the log is made into lumber, boards cut from it must be edged and trimmed, a process that requires someone to decide how to trim off defective parts and make the board as valuable as possible. Then som...
متن کاملCamera Based Lumber Strength Classification System
In this paper, a new camera based lumber strength classification solution using solely knot features is presented. Two alternative classifiers, k-NN and SVM, are applied to classifing pinewood boards based on their breaking strength. Features for classification are formed using knot properties, which are extracted from four sides of the board using machine vision algorithms. Extracted propertie...
